While we stood in line to see how these two telescopes in Tucson and Tempe to you evey astronomers had a view you wouldn't believe how Larson and Scott Davis made history when they proved that a 35 year old theory was correct. But in order to do it, they had to travel all the way down to the southern hemisphere and 41,000 feet up in the air. Gentlemen, welcome to Arizona alumni forum. Scott, tell me why. Why did you go to New Zealand to do this research project that you were on? Why not United States? At that time of the year, Holly was on its way in toward Perry Healey and our closest passage to the sun. And it was available from the northern hemisphere. But when it came around the other side of the Sun around the back, it was very southerly placed in the sky. And so in order to get an optimum amount of observing time on the object, we had to go, basically to a place where we could point the telescope, the airborne telescope, which would be in the middle of approximately the southern hemisphere, Australia, New Zealand, South America would have been appropriate. This is a tremendous technological feat to fly an airplane with such a hole in it mostly our planes will not tolerate this kind of, of treatment. It gives astronomers an opportunity to do their work above most of the atmosphere. The plane flies typically at altitudes of 41,000 feet, where you are above most of the water vapor and some of the other molecules in our atmosphere that would preclude doing certain types of observations. Dried Kiper was a pioneer in the application of aircraft to planetary science that is, in the mid 60s he introduced with the collaboration of NASA people the the use of aircraft to observe the planets and the sun. And the types of questions people ask about comments are the same questions schoolchildren might ask for example, what are they made out of? Where do they come from? What do they mean? Where do they go later? Do they come back? What happens to them in the interim period? And have all of these questions the question of composition has been the most difficult one to answer. A number of theories have been put forth over the years. And in the 1950s, enough data had accumulated that indicated, many of the ideas simply could not any longer be held, and some new model was necessary to explain the observed phenomena. And Professor Fred Whipple proposed this dirty snowball model in which you just think of taking snow late in the spring, this got a lot of dirt mixed in with it and compacting it loosely, and then throwing that into the solar system. And that very crude idea represents the model which scientists have used for the last 30 years or so to test their measurements on the dirt component of this model has been detected in astronomical observations, there's no doubt that silicate sand or dirt and however you want to call it is a significant component of commentary matter. But the water component, which would be frozen as ice in this solid material, has eluded definitive detections over the years that has simply been a very difficult molecule to detect, because of the presence of water vapor in our atmosphere, which simply precludes seeing the water vapor molecule beyond our atmosphere. There haven't been too many bright comets and the technology available to astronomers for making the search simply was inadequate until, let's say the last decade or so. So what we have done in our work has been to conduct an experiment focused on the detection and study of the water molecule in Comet Halley. And we've put together new technology detector technology.
