I'm Mark beech, many Arizona Ian's are in the midst of making travel and vacation plans for the summer months. Dr. Hellman, what factors should be taken into consideration","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73844/file/159887#t=5.0,34.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73844/file/159887/transcript/37749/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: when determining a mode of vacation travel? Mart as we were talking, I want to emphasize that I am not an expert either on automotive or air or other types of mechanics or travel. All I have is a lot of experience and traveling over this country and then the state of Arizona plus some large amount of travel abroad both by car and my plane and train as well. I think the principal thing that one wants to consider first that are the direct costs. One is fooling himself if he just takes into consideration only the gasoline and all costs. So my rule of thumb right now is about 10 to 12 cents per mile for small cars and 12 to 15 cents per mile for larger cars. And I don't think you can get by any cheaper than that, though whatsoever. So if you're going to Cincinnati, or to Chicago or New York or Seattle, you better look at 10 to 12 cents a mile for your Toyotas and others are 12 to 15 cents for your ltds and a variety of the larger cars to mention a few. Secondly, of course is how much do you value your time, if you're going to take three days to get to Chicago, you're going to get there tired, perhaps, unless you have some awfully efficient driving partners. Your time is worth an awful lot. Many people do value their time. Third, I think is the the breakeven number of people involved. In other words, one person certainly cannot afford to drive an automobile in my personal opinion unless he's got other factors entering besides just the direct costs or the cost of his time. And my experience, you have to get above two people, perhaps three or four people before it pays you to drive. Now of course you have not only these direct costs of your automobile and an airplane versus the airplane ticket or the train ticket, you have your housing, you have your meals, it depends on how much you want to get by on there, then many people underrate the risk factors involved in traveling one way or the other. There are a lot of risk factors. What are some of those? Well, the insurance Of course, you're many people have a horror of flying. But the truth of the matter is that the statistics are much more in favor of flying, then there are two and automobiles as far as just the risk factors the insurance. So with respect to this, the other, the other is what I call a time distance relationships. On shorter distances. Of course, it's, it's pretty hard to get good airplane service. So you have much more favoring the automobile, if you're going just to short to shorter distances and your intermediates, and your interval drivings if you're going to drive in the interval, if you need an automobile when you get there and you have to calculate whether it's cheaper to rent a car, and that sort of thing. So you have many, many, many considerations, which I think should be calculated very objectively. So what I'm saying before one makes a precipitous decision just to either drive across the country or our fly. You have your red eye specials Of course, which all of us are familiar with. And if you have a data recuperate after you get back there the red eye specials are very good value, just like charters going overseas charters are extremely good values these days.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73844/file/159887#t=35.0,272.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73844/file/159887/transcript/37749/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: I've been talking with world traveler and head of the University of Arizona's Agricultural Economics Department Dr. Jimmy Hellman.
