This is the beginning of the 20th year of operation for the University of Arizona's nuclear reactor. The reactor is located in and operated by the Department of nuclear engineering at the U of A, but is a campus wide research facility. With us today is Dr. Robert seal. Dr. seal is head of the nuclear engineering department at the University. Dr. Seal, maybe you could identify some of the areas on campus that have used the nuclear reactor in the past.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73821/file/159848#t=6.0,37.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73821/file/159848/transcript/37719/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: Certainly, first of all, let me say it's a very, very real pleasure to be here and to acquaint people in Arizona with some of the activities in the College of Engineering. Some of the things you may not ordinarily hear about on a routine basis. I would like to say that the reactor was actually installed and first operated in December of 1958. At the time, it was the first university installation of the particular kind of reactor, so called trigger, which is an acronym for some things that builders thought were special characteristics of the reactor, but in any event, it was the first trigger installed in any educational institution in the country. The foresight of the people who were responsible for obtaining the reactor at the time is very well borne out I think, by the fact that there are both well over 60 of these reactors have the same general type. Now in research institutions and universities around the world, it's certainly the most popular research reactor type in the world right now. The reactor, of course, doesn't make steam and therefore it doesn't generate any of the energy per se that we use on campus. But it does provide a radiation environment which is useful in doing various kinds of research for a wide variety of areas here and in a lot of departments on campus. One other historical point First, the reactor was upgraded or modified in some of its equipment features about six years ago, and now has a wider capability in terms of the kinds of operation that we can carry out than it did when it was originally installed. As far as the research activities that are going on, I think you could almost go anywhere on campus and find in almost any college things by way of research that have or are now using the reactor, I might say that there is a technique that involves the use of the reactor as a neutron source, which along with other equipment can allow the identification of very small amounts of trace materials in a wide variety of mineral are biological samples. And that is one of the uses generally that we've used the reactor for several years ago.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73821/file/159848#t=38.0,212.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73821/file/159848/transcript/37719/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: Students in in Animal Sciences use the reactor to analyze some material that he obtained as a result of a piece of a feeding program on feedlot cattle, and was able to evaluate the efficiency with which the animals digested and eventually converted into protein, the food that they were being fed in the feedlot.
