It will be summer in the southern hemisphere when the University of Arizona is Dr. Lauren school fly south in early January. But the 80 year old professor of geosciences is not going south to soak up the sun, he'll be making his sixth visit to Antarctica, a land of perpetual ice and snow. Gould first visited Antarctica in 1928 as second in command of the bird expedition, America's first exploration there. Now nearly a half century later, it is probable that no other living scientist has been involved as long with at Arctic research. Gould, who has won numerous awards, written extensively and served on many scientific, academic and philanthropic organizations largely as a result of his and article work will be going this time as a guide for the executive secretary of the National Science Foundation and three other members of the foundation's governing board. They will visit many of the 84 American scientific projects underway at the bottom of the world. Gould who visited the South Pole twice the last time in November of 1969. Said he won't go to the pole on this trip.
