In 1941 the Alumni Association gave its first set of awards to alumni, and we've been doing it continuously since then. And in total, we've given about 2000 awards. We have close to 200,000 addressable alumni. We actually have over 200,000 graduates of the institution. That means the people that you see sitting at the front of the room represent part of the body, less than 1% of our alumni body, who have been recognized by the institution. One, that makes it very prestigious that they're sitting up here in front of you, but two, it shows you how selective we've been over the years, that we actually would like to step up the pace, that we are always looking for people who are doing great things. They're doing it in their communities, they're doing it in their profession, on behalf of the University of Arizona, in service in many different ways for the institution. So we're always looking for people to have a city seated up here at homecoming.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2320/collection_resources/98181/file/195331#t=2.0,66.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2320/collection_resources/98181/file/195331/transcript/87437/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"SPEAKER 1: And then we also give awards throughout the years. We work with all of the colleges. They give awards at their ceremonies. Some other awards will be given throughout this weekend. I think nursing tomorrow, agriculture tomorrow, will be giving awards as well as some other places, and then we also give awards at the commencement ceremonies each year. So if you know people who are doing great things in your community or in their profession or for the university, let us know that I want to introduce to you the members of the Alumni Awards Committee, who actually recommend these people to the Board of Directors? If they're here, I'd ask them to stand, Rod, Cleveland. Jim Garrett, the Alumni Board. I won't introduce them all to you, but we have a number on here. If you would stand, let's give them a hand in the institution. The way we do that is we have a focal point, an association, board of directors, and that board comes together five times a year on behalf of the 200,000 alumni to really do the business and be the interchange between the alumni body and the administration and the faculty and the students in the institution. So they render tremendous volunteer service for us.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2320/collection_resources/98181/file/195331#t=67.0,138.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2320/collection_resources/98181/file/195331/transcript/87437/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"SPEAKER 1: And we did see two deans here, Eugene Sander and Tom Peterson. And so this gave us sort of a private opportunity in front of your family and friends to say thank you for what you've done, and to congratulate you and present your certificates and your award. So that's part of the reason we try to hold this more private ceremony. When you get to Bear Down tonight, you'll get lots of recognition, and people will be congratulating you. Your names are in the programs and so on. This is our chance to really say thank you and congratulations. Now, there's one key volunteer that's in the audience who needs to stand up and that's Debbie Frizzell. During the war, you discovered that one of the ship's bells was located at the Puget Sound Naval Station in Bremerton, Washington. You decided it should rest here. The other bell, which was on USS Arizona, finds itself today at the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. You worked tirelessly, first to halt plans to melt down this important piece of Americana for war materiel and then campaigned to bring the bell here, for today it resides in the Memorial Union clock tower. This bell from the USS Arizona, aboard whose decks 1102 of our great countrymen died, is a somber and important reminder of a powerful theme in our national history: even in our darkest hours of torment and self doubt, when Americans, when Americans choose to come together, we can defeat any foe, we can right any wrong. Through your efforts, solid proof of that fact is visible and tangible on our campus today to anyone with eyes to see or fingers to touch, and the heart to understand this bell's inspiring message. Long may it reign. Bill, alumni and veterans alike, will always be in your debt.
