And my grandma's people came from uh . . . she lived in Westmeath, in . . . the County of Westmeath, in Ireland. And they had a farm, and then there was that English thing. Oh, you should hear my grandmother [?] [laughs, and Fredman laughs with her]. And they uh uh . . . see, Irish immigrants were looked down upon, and meeting that boat . . . . I've always admired . . . I've never even known one. He'd have to get back to his business, and he couldn't come till the next summer. And then he would take her. Can you imagine, the big ox?  [Laughingly] she couldn't go any place by herself--to her sister, who had married and moved to Janesville, Wisconsin. And of course, such a trip couldn't be undertaken by an unmarried woman by herself. They had somebody they knew in Kentucky, and then young men in those days did not stay around the family homestead. They moved on west, so that, you know. So they went . . . he landed in Leavenworth, Kansas with his brother Richard. So then they all moved to Chicago. 'Cause like all the . . . . By this time Leavenworth was dying. The thing . . . the scene had moved to Kansas City. See, at . . . Leavenworth was at one time the most important city in Kansas, because the fort was there, and uh the cathedral was in Leavenworth, the Catholic cathedral. I was trying to figure out. That was the second time we came to Tucson, 'cause we came in 1934, and that's what the . . . that's when we ca- . . . that was when Jeannie[sp?] had her first husband. He had TB. They had to come for his health, and Lucy had fallen down and not broken her elbow, dislocated her elbow. And it was a winter much like this one that the Middle West is going through now. There was cold, and snow, and wind, and [coughs] . . . and she'd go and have s- . . . . She got neuritis, and she'd go to have heat treatments. Well, then she'd get out of the doctor's office and wait for the streetcar, and then she had a transfer ticket to that . . . from our house to that doctor's office, then wait on the corner again to transfer, and so the doctor said to her . . . . Well, he was our family doctor, knew him, oh, for a long time, and he said, \"Lucy, you'd be better off, but you'd get a better relief from the pain of it, to take the money and go to Tucson where Jean[sp?] is.\" She had some because Jimmy[sp?]  had TB, because, he said, \"To get . . . the heat'll help, but . . .  but you get out in the cold again, and it really is a ways to come.\" I forgot how much she paid. I suppose $3 or some enormous sum like that, in those days, 'cause it was during the Depression, and we had so little money. But he said, even so, \"Take . . . take this money that you spend here,\" 'cause he said, \"I hate to take it, 'cause it's not doing you a lot of good, sit in the sun a week or so, until this horrible weather is past, and then you can . . . you . . . you'll be better. But this way it's just spending your money is like throwing it away.\" So we came, and uh they lived out in a t- . . . Well, they didn't have trailer parks. They called them \"tourist courts\" in those days, on Oracle Road, so we got a [laughingly] tourist court to . . . and, like a little place, you know. And Jeans[sp?] said . . . well, the idea was for . . . for me . . . by this time I had lost my job in Chicago, too. I had had a job in Chicago. Then I'd lost it, 'cause the place folded up. The man died, and the place folded up. Dreary in Chi- . . . oh, and there were lines of people standing around in the street, but they had no place to go, nothing to do. So it was uh . . . and . . . uh that place closed in December, and this was in February. And so Jean[sp?] said, \"Well, I'll walk downtown with you.\" It was the other side of Wetmore Road, and we came trudging down the . . . . There was no . . . there was . . . cemeteries were there, but . . . on Oracle Road, but that was all. And we trudged down, and uh I went and put an applic- . . . . I asked for a job in Steinfeld's, and I asked for a job in Jacome's, and they just were all polite. And they just didn't say, \"no,\" but they said, \"Stop by again. We're not hiring right now.” So it was such a long walk there and back again, took us an awful long time, too. So we uh . . . we cut across fields and things to . . . . We deci- . . . uh Luc- . . . I said it couldn't be. I couldn't get there and back, 'cause there was no bus, nothing. So we came into town then, and we looked for a place, and we found a place at 24 East 15th, and it was $15 a month, and that included gas and light. Had a kitchen and a bedroom, and the kitchen was like a uh, you know, canvas screen, canvased in porch that . . . a back porch on the second floor. So then I uh went back and I . . . to all those places, and . . . . Oh, well, as a matter of fact I didn't even much know where I lived, except it was on Oracle Road. I couldn't give them an address or telephone number. So I went back to the places, and I said, \"I live now at 24 East 15th, but there were no te- . . . .\" We didn't have a telephone. So that place was put off [?]. So the . . . I looked, and she said \"white kid gloves. I'm going to Chicago with my husband.\" I said, \"Oh, you don't want to take white [laughingly] kid gloves. Get white cotton gloves and wash 'em out every night. Be sure they're clean. Get a m- . . . get a couple pairs.\" But she said uh . . . but I said, \"Then you can . . . but be sure they're always clean. But don't wear, you know, take . . . .\" I said, \"See, they're a dollar a pair.\" She said, \"I could take better ones than that.\" They had better ones, too. So we were . . . she said, \"How about I take six pairs, and I won't have to wash 'em . . . wash 'em out?\" And I said, \"Yeah, well, if you're going . . . .\" And well, she said, \"How do you mean you did . . . just in the wash basin?\" I said, \"Put 'em on your hands, you know, [sound of her doing the described motions] take the soap and wash 'em and rinse 'em out. Hang 'em up.\" So [sighs] then this Mame Henry came out, the one I knew was the boss, but by this time she was coming along. \"Oh,\" she said, \"oh, Mrs. Steinfeld, your gloves came in.\" She said, \"I don't want those white kid gloves.\" She said, \"I'm taking white co- . . . [breaks up laughing with Fredman] gloves, rinsing them out to Chi-. . . .\" And Mamie Henry said, \"What!\" She said, and I thought, \"Oh, good, mm-hm.\" And of course I didn't travel such as her, ‘cause it was the Drake Hotel  [They continue to laugh.] Doing a little light laundry on the side. [Laughs.] But she was very pleasant, and she took the cotton . . . six pairs of white cotton gloves, and she uh . . . she did take the white kid gloves.
