I'm Mark beech. student enrollment at the University of Arizona declined this semester for the first time since 1952. University Registrar David Butler said that undergraduate enrollment actually showed a slight increase, but a decline in the number of graduate students resulted in the overall decrease. Butler said that the total number of student credit hours also dropped from last year. He said the decrease in credit hours indicates that most students are taking fewer courses. buffer said the enrollment dropped at the university maybe because of an economic recovery that is providing more jobs, reductions in financial benefits to veterans, and a decline in the US birth rate. A university of Arizona educator Dr. Joon Hamlin has developed a program which teaches children ages two to five to read. Dr. Hamlin, the coordinator of two University preschool programs, says the children don't have the highest IQ is that it's just a matter of mastering the decoding process. Hamlin says the program uses symbols for sounds. She has written 20 hand lettered books to be used with the program with a very simple vocabulary that two year olds can understand. She said the children start learning words around the age of two, but that by the time they're three, they have a huge vocabulary, something like 2500 words. You have a president dr. john Schaefer said during a recent campus speech that the shortage of classroom space at the university has become critical. Schafer said the school has reached the point where it no longer has any flexibility in its use of classrooms. He said no classroom space has been added to the university since the completion of the biological sciences West building in 1970. Since that time, Schaefer said the university's enrollment has grown by more than 5000 students. University of Arizona officials will last the state legislature in January for the funds to build an $11 million classroom office building on campus. The funds will be requested as part of the university's 1977 78 capital outlay budget. The building which would be constructed in two phases, would be at least four to five storeys high. With the space evenly divided between classrooms and offices. The first phase of construction would cost nearly $6 million. A university spokesman said if the funding is approved, it would take about two and a half years before the building would be completed. Dr. Tom giros is a professor at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary laboratory and one of the world's foremost authorities on the solar system's largest and most active planet Jupiter. Dr. Girls was deeply involved in the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft flybys of Jupiter, and is the editor of the recently published book titled Jupiter. I asked Dr. Girls why Jupiter is such an interesting planet. And if the United States is currently involved in any future Outer Space projects,","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73846/file/159889#t=5.0,173.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73846/file/159889/transcript/37752/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: it is the largest planet in the solar system, it controls gravitationally, everything really around it like the asteroid belt, and the orbits of any object in that in that area. And it also is most interesting object in in being a gaseous planet, very massive object. Let me for a moment, sort of round is off a little bit by seeing how much more in his project that we'll have to do, because the second round of the spacecraft is now on its way to Saturn. And we'll be meeting and actually flying by Saturn in September one they can already give us the date which is fabulous accuracy in their in their ballistics, but on September of 1979 there is this flyby of the planet Saturn. And now we hope to do the same thing we have already attended to have agreement with NASA on this, that again, there will be a meeting possibly here on the campus and there will be a book by the University of Arizona press and that one instead of being called Jupiter will be called saturd. And at that time, we will be all through with this particular program. Dr. Eric Gall and dr. john Boyer have each received $4,000 from the southwest chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Dr. Gall is looking for the causes of rheumatoid arthritis. And Dr. Boyer is trying to learn what causes scar formation in the joints of arthritic aches. The scar buildup is what causes crippling. Both physicians are members of the Internal Medicine Department. A $1.7 million expansion of the College of Nursing should begin sometime this winter. Dr. Berlin Katie Val, he will be vice president for Health Sciences said two additional floors will be added to the facility which is south of the Health Sciences Center. The new edition will house graduate students, laboratories and equipment. Funding for the nursing college expansion came from the federal government To the state and miscellaneous private sources, University of Arizona library and David Laird says the move into the university's new $12 million library should be completed in time for the scheduled opening of the facility on January 12.
