The holiday season is usually associated with lots of good times and happy people. But for many persons the Christmas season is one of the most stressful times of the year. Dr. Ben Brown is a staff psychiatrist with the mental health section of the University of Arizona Student Health Service and lecture in the psychiatry department at Arizona Health Sciences Center. Dr. Brown is there anything that can be done to cope with the so called holiday blues?","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73772/file/159455#t=3.0,31.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73772/file/159455/transcript/37656/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: Well, there are a number of things which can be done. during holiday times many emergency treatment centers, both psychiatric and medical find that they have increases in the number of crises which they have to deal with, whether they be psychiatric crises or auto accidents secondary to over use of alcohol. And in order to deal with these problems and beforehand and a preventive fashion, it's important to become aware of the sources of stress at Christmas, and also make some concrete plans to deal with these stresses. Because really, it's not that difficult to avoid different problems around Christmas with a little bit of planning. And some of the potential sources of stress, which occur at Christmas include very high social expectations that the individual will have a good time with his family. But individuals who are far away from their family due to being at a job or in the military may be unable to meet these expectations. Also, individuals who are caught in a troublesome family situation may be afraid that they will have a confrontation during this time, which will make for an unpleasant scene. Other sources of stress include the whole area of gift giving individuals who focus upon gifts as being a major measure of how well their relationships are going may find themselves greatly stressed by gift giving a Christmas. And last but not least, the amount of alcohol and food intake at Christmas usually goes up dramatically for people. And those individuals who may have heart disease or diabetes or have had a prior problem with alcohol may be much more at risk at this time. This leads to the area of making plans to deal with these potential issues. Now for the individual who is in a place where there is no local family, he should really make plans to spend Christmas with friends, or in social institutions like at the University of Arizona with the Newman Catholic center, or with families who are looking for individuals in the community to spend Christmas with them. It's very interesting that here on campus at Thanksgiving, our switchboard service had a large number of families who were looking for students to spend Thanksgiving with them. And it turned out that there were far more offers than there were takers for these Thanksgiving events. Secondly, the individual who does have troublesome family issues may make some plans to avoid dealing with any of these issues during Christmas because they really need to be settled later. and concentrate on the positive sharing aspects of Christmas such as being with relatives he may not have seen for some time, catching up on the news, and so on and so forth. Now, as far as gifts goes, it's really important to recognize that gifts can't make or break any solid relationship. That relationship is determined by what goes on between two people on a long term basis not upon a particular gift to be exchanged once a year. And last but not least individuals who do have particular health problems such as cardiac disease, diabetes, or previous problems with alcohol should make some very concrete plans to limit the amount of food that they take in. During this time.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73772/file/159455#t=32.0,213.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73772/file/159455/transcript/37656/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: I've been talking with Dr. Ben Brown staff psychiatrist with the mental health section at the University of Arizona Student Health Service and a lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. This has been a dramatic year for earthquakes with major tremors hitting Guatemala, Turkey, Chile in China. With all this shaky activity, the University of Arizona has decided to look into its own backyard to recently approved projects funded with about $48,000 from the US Geological Survey will study earthquake potential and a 100 mile area along the San Andreas Fault extending into the Mojave Desert and north of Los Angeles. The region along the fault, which cuts through California in the southwestern corner of Arizona is called the Palmdale, uplift area and reportedly has been slowly bulging upward. You have a geosciences Professor William Boyle says the bulging caused by the same shifting rock which is moving Los Angeles towards San Francisco at several centimeters a year may be initial symptoms that it will spring loose someday, Arizona is relatively earthquake free. Although a slight earthquake hit the Chino Valley near Prescott last February. Professor Bowles said that although a sound basis for earthquake predictions doesn't presently exist. The evacuation procedures used before the anticipated quake in China saved a great number of lives.
