And I can get to some of those stories later, but I went to Iowa, and I was met at the airport, I think, by Warner Jones, who said, we're in trouble. We're in big trouble. And I went to the I went to the headquarters, and was told that Moe was going to be in Iowa two days later, and that I was in charge of his first trip two days later, and that trip was a 250 mile bus trip in five different cities in the state. So early the next morning, I went out, and these cities have remained etched in my mind forever. Atlantic, Harlan Carroll Ida Grove, home of no one other than former senator Harold Hughes and Sioux City. So I had one day to advance that entire 250 mile bus trip in temperatures that ranged from 20 to Five Below I everywhere I went that day, of course, when I arrived, who was it? Fred Harris. Fred Harris was speaking right where Moe was going to be speaking the next day. So I kept following Fred Harris all day. But in any event, I got to the towns. I try and hook up with the people who were identified as Utah people. I was able to hook up in two of the five towns. I did my 250 miles and went back to Des Moines that night, and then early the next morning, went to Atlantic and met Mo and literally, I'd pray that people would show up, and we'd get mo into the site for the event, and I'd stay for 10 minutes, and I'd hop in the car, and I'd drive about 90 miles an hour to the next site to Try and find a crowd. And this happened from Atlantic to Harlan. I was saved in Carroll because some civics teacher brought two bus loads of kids, so we had a crowd there. Then I went to Ida Grove, which was the worst any anyhow. I got to Ida Grove, it was about five below. I had about 15 minutes to put flyers on the cars in the street. Mo arrived. One person showed up. Moe was not very happy. Moe asked me for a cup of coffee. I gave it to him. He put it on the table and he sat on it. This is my first day as an advancement. Mo enjoyed talking to that one person while he was sober. That means the person, I mean, I left for Sioux City. Mo got there about an hour and a half later. The event that night was actually well organized and went very well. And my first trip ended out as follows. We were doing a plant gate in Sioux City at six the next morning, and I had responsibility for the motorcade, and we had six cars. The temperature that night was Five Below and the wind chill was 30 below. This was my first trip as an advance man. I wanted to stay an advanced man, and I didn't know how to tie cables into batteries. So that evening, I would go to sleep, set my alarm for two hours, get dressed, go out, start all six cars, go back to sleep two hours later, get up, start all six cars. And I did this three times at night. The whole motorcade started that morning. We get to the plant gate, and Mo says, pretty cold out here, isn't it? And then he thanked me and said, things will get better. And it was a great experience after that.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270331#t=600.0,824.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270331/transcript/78708/annotation/26","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"SPEAKER 1: Okay, let's, let's pass it to Brad. And so finally, we decided to call Mo and ask him what to do. And essentially, Mo just said, Mark is always getting lost on mountains. Just Just don't worry about it. And sure enough, Mark showed up that time, but I do remember the first event we had with with Mark, and then with Mo. And then I pass it along, because it was we had an event I lived in Lebanon, which is very close to Hanover and and it's one of the three liberal areas of New Hampshire. And we had. This yard and and it was a nice day, and we thought we'd have the event outside, because people were actually coming. Sometimes you have events in New Hampshire, no, because the people wanted to meet Mo and I think Stuart was there. And we, we had just built this, just an above ground pool that we had, we had done, but there was this huge pile of dirt in the yard. So what we decided to do is plan an American flag in the dirt. But what we didn't know was that the kids had let their their white lab rats loose, and just before the event, they told us that the lab rats were in the pile of dirt and about to pop out in any moment. I'm sure history wants to know all about the white lab rats, but, but, but suffice it to say, it was a nerve wracking experience. And Gorham, oh, I was gonna tell the yellow story well, but this, this is a, this isn't just an advanced story. Mark, as part of his training, put me in charge of making the hotel accommodations for Moe and the staff and for the Secret Service. And what did I know? So I put Moe in the inn that we stayed at, I think, was called the Gorham inn, and there were two different buildings. So I put Moe in the staff in one building, and Moe's detail, including the head of his detail, Chuck Vance, in a different building. When we arrived there, and Chuck Vance saw that he was in a different building from the candidate, he laid into me, unbelievable. You've never heard words like that. He was livid afterwards. I said, Gee, Mark, you didn't tell me about that. And Mark, who could say anything to anybody with a straight face, told me that he did that on purpose, and had talked to chuck about it because he wanted to train me for the types of things that I would confront on the campaign. I got the key, I opened it up, and I saw man's luggage in there. And I thought, huh, there must be a problem. Hard on you. You never get to see your father, and it's really tough. Well, in point of fact, it was actually the opposite for us, because in 19 nine, in 1966 my parents were divorced, and, you know, I was lucky to get a weekend, a month with the guy at dinner, a month with him. And that's why the campaign was so special for many of the kids, because we really did get a chance to see Him and in His real workplace and and the greatness that everybody sensed in Him, we did too, and we wanted our own little piece of that. And that's large part why I was there, was that here was a chance for me to get to see my father in action in a way that I'd never had been deprived of for 1010, years. He was that. He would have been the genius. And I, and I really firmly believe that it wasn't his fault that Wisconsin was lost. A lot of people pointed the finger and said, Bedard blew it in Wisconsin, but it wasn't, I mean, if anything, he was really such a large part of the reason why Wisconsin was almost a big victory. He was extremely dedicated. He was a wild man. He would say things that would make him be at a very big heart, but he was really good at pissing people off, which was really too bad, because he really had his heart in the right spot. But I you know this, campaigns can do a lot of very good things for people. I mean, I met my husband on the campaign. My man got to meet Bambi Udall. I mean, all kinds of wonderful things happen. Would have never occurred to me to even do that. I mean, he just, he got a lot of kids, really motivated, and it's really too bad that it was such a horrible loss and and there was so much finger pointing, they kind of had to go on necessarily, at a situation like that. Yeah, and the point was that I worked in the Kennedy campaign in 80. And the Kennedy campaign in 80 raised money a lot by just borrowing money. They had access. They had this phony baloney scheme of art where they went to the Chemical Bank and the art was used as collateral, and that saved the campaign for a very crucial period. Mo never had, I mean, we didn't raise the money that we should, but at the same time, we had people on the Finance Committee who will go nameless, who didn't even max out. And I said, Why are they on the Finance Committee? If they haven't given the most, you could give us $1,000 you later, you later read stuff by Sapphire. And I don't like airplanes, and I don't try to fly on airplanes. I try to drive everywhere. But I did take one flight, and it was from Jonesboro to Little Rock I flew, and it was the former president of Brazil's airplane. We were told that you were supposed to but I think it was the president of Brazil in 1904 and they had a chandelier and in the in the airplane, and I'm, I don't like to fly in the first place. And they said, well, it's only a 40 minute flight. It was the worst flight of my life. First of all, it was a terrible flight, because I thought it took 40 minutes for the plane to get off the the runway. So when is the plane getting up in the air? And anyway, we went to Little Rock and Pryor, who had been a House member, was not yet a senator, was now the governor. This was prior to Bill Clinton. The President was 1975 and the hostess was gorgeous. I'm sure Clinton knew her. Her name was sissy McBride. Sissy. Well, you remember these things, and I'm here at the governor's mansion, and his wife was named Barbara prior, and he had a white Lincoln Continental. And he said, Would you like to stay here the night, which was the only invitation I've ever gotten, to stay in the governor's mansion. The plane story is this the plane that I'd gone from Jonesboro to Little Rock. They said they were flying on to Iowa, and I had just been through this horrible flight. Ray Majerus from, I think it was region 10 of the UAW, and then he went on to national leadership in the UAW, but COVID Hall. And, you know, some of the other great ethnic events in Milwaukee, we went over and did Mike Kerman led the crew of us over on the are the Convair or Con Air charter from over to do Mount Rushmore as an event where we played poker with Ella and D Jackson, and in, in, in that with Chuck Quinn and I. Pappas and Bill plant. And that was a memorable event. Mo traveling through Lexington market in Baltimore, when we did a one day Saturday afternoon stop in Maryland, where he held up the Hubert Humphrey fish at the fish market. And then, well, there was a famous picture, I think, for 1968 where Hubert Humphrey held up a fish in a fish market. And it was, it was, it was a famous you did that event that became an event that the press would take as a, you know, typical events like the St Patrick's Day parade in New York, you know. And so you went to Lexington market in Baltimore, and you held up a fish. And mo did it okay. And then there was, you know, Connecticut, where the where Toby Moffitt had endorsed Jimmy Carter, and Esther Newberg was the state coordinator. And what's the other one's name, and rosemary, Craig person, right? They, the three of them, replaced me because when, when she fired me, this was a great story. Actually, this is a great story. She fired me because she was, she was being really mean to two of the advanced people, I'm in terrible. And she'd say, I hate the staff. Keep the staff at you. So she was being really nasty, terrible. And I said to her, tigs, like, you know, they're working really hard. They're trying to keep this campaign going. You know, couldn't you just try to be a little bit nicer, or at least not as nasty to them? And she turned around, and she said to me, excuse me, what are you staff? And I realized at that point that she was no longer thinking me, of me as staff. You know, she was thinking of me as like her pal, and as her pal, I was useless, because I was the staff person. And so I said, Yeah, I'm staff. And she said, Well, I hate staff, so why don't so you, you You are fired, you are finished. You are not I do not need you as myself. I mean, it was so I, I said to mo, mo, she fired me. And he said, Well, what are you gonna do? And I said, Well, I'm in Wisconsin. Can you send me home? And he said, Oh, no. He said, I don't want you to go home. I want you to go to New York. Go to New York. We have a campaign in New York. He said to somebody, cut it. Cut Iris a ticket. She can go to New York. Now, I had been working for them for over a year. When I started, they paid me $50 I'm sorry. When I started, my salary was $50 a week, which they never paid me. And that night, Mo said to me, and we're going to raise your salary to $100 a week, which they also never paid me, and they never paid me. So I went to New York, and I became the surrogate, or the celebrity scheduler, and we had a lot of celebrities, and I can't remember the list, but they were but they stayed in New York. They didn't travel, they didn't travel with us. But the one thing that I wanted to say was that about convention. Because after I was in Ohio for about a day a day, say something about convention, when we when we were in New York, we lived at the we lived at the Roosevelt Hotel. And it was, you know, it was just like all the other hotels who lived at. It was shabby and worn and whatever else it was, but we were all together. And when we went back for the convention, we went to the we all stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel. And by that time, we knew that we were not going to win, but, but there was, there was a feeling. We still had a feeling that. And I always used to say that the one thing about the Udall campaign and about Mo was that regardless of win, lose, whatever, you never had to apologize for working for mo never, I mean, you were always proud of him. You're always proud of what he did. You know, he would do things like, if he didn't think your policy position was the right policy position, he would get up and he would say, All right, now my staff is going to kill me for this. But, you know, this is what I really think. I mean, you couldn't, you know, he was just, he was too honest, he was too much of the kind of person that you really want to be an elected official. And when we realized that we didn't have the delegates, he called a lot of the staff people into a room, and they had cut some kind of a deal with the Carter people, which is a whole other story that deals with the Carter people, but they cut some kind of a deal with the Carter people, that if he gave up his delegates, that they would let him speak, that if Jimmy Carter had, you know, a unanimous that it was a unanimous consent kind of victory, that they would let most speak. And he called all of us into a room, and he said, here's here's the choice that we have. But I don't think I should make it, because you have all worked so hard and for so long that I really want you to make it. We can either do the first round of votes and all the delegates will stand up and we'll have this great show of you know how hard you all worked, he said, or we can let our delegates go, and I can speak, he said, but I, you know, whatever you want. And so you know that we all kind of talked, and there was a kind of, there was, well, if this happens, and basically we really decided that we wanted Moe to be heard. We really wanted him to be heard that was very important to us. It was more important for us to let that convention know what they were missing by not having elected this guy than it was to have a show of how many delegates we had collected across the country and but it was so it was so much motive to you know, I mean, he said he talked. Was back there at the TV with him and Ella and the Secret Service agent, and Ella was just Ella was so mad she couldn't even talk. And I have never before or since seen mo angry. I mean, I'd seen him irritated occasionally, but I've never seen him angry and Mo, and Mo was so mad he couldn't even talk. Well, I'm not sure Ella was ever too mad to talk. So what was he mad about? What he was mad about was they, they went up, there's apparently a VIP section of the convention for other candidates, and VIPs mo had been specifically banned from it. They had gone up there to sit, and Carter had had them specifically banned from it. Yeah, and I don't know what he was considering doing, what Ella was considering doing. He was sitting there just quiet and fuming, and it took Coretta Scott King. King came, came by the room and came in and pulled him out and talked to him. And I don't know what she said, But my impression was that she basically talked him into getting on the stage. I mean, he was so upset he was thinking of not even getting on and she basically, you know, talked him into doing that. I think what he was not going to do, maybe, I don't even know, was not do the hand, hold hands, amazing sort of thing. But I know she came and kind of intervened and talked to him, and Mo went up on the podium and did his thing and and I sat back. I just always with him on the podium too. So I sat in the room with the Secret Service agent watching mo do this. The Secret Service agent broke down. He was just crying. He was sobbing, you know, and this was during, during your demonstration. So I just wanted to add that as another perspective.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333#t=2444.0,2600.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333/transcript/78710/annotation/82","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"SPEAKER 5: I'd like to just on the convention. Like to add one little vignette to it, which was very special to me, and again, underscores what I feel was a very good side of Ella and how much you cared for people, as much as she said she didn't like the staff. I had gone home from to North Carolina, from Ohio, and I was two weeks late to start studying for the bar. And I walked in the bar exam review course, and everybody was was studying away, and I was like bored to death and thinking what I was missing. And I was it was two weeks before the bar exam when the convention was being held in New York, and I wasn't going to go, because I figured I had to study for the bar and Sunday night, either Saturday night or Sunday night. I forget, the phone rang in my basement, wet, damp college apartment, and it was Mo and L on the phone, and a bunch of you guys were in this in there a bunch of staff people, and they put them up to calling me and telling me that it wasn't going to be complete unless I came up there. So I took the credit card that still had about $3,000 on it from the Ohio campaign, and got on a plane and went to New York and stayed up there through Friday morning, went back and studied. And I thought sure I was going to not pass the bar, but I did manage. But it was just one of those special things that both Mo and Ella would do. Someone would suggest it, and then they would take it as their own idea. Who knew how they how they came about doing this, but they did it for a lot of us.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333#t=2601.0,2687.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333/transcript/78710/annotation/83","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: Hold on one second, because.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333#t=2688.0,2690.0"}]},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333/transcript/78710","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["English [Transcript]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270333/transcript/78710/annotation/84","type":"Annotation","motivation":"subtitling","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/078/710/original/azu_ms396-045_side1_a.vtt?1745252703","format":"text/vtt","language":"en"},"target":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/078/710/original/azu_ms396-045_side1_a.vtt?1745252703"}]}]},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334","type":"Canvas","label":{"en":["Media File 4 of 4 - azu_ms396-045_side2_a.mp3"]},"duration":242.928,"width":640,"height":360,"thumbnail":[{"id":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/public/images/audio-default.png","type":"Image","format":"image/png"}],"items":[{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334/content/1","type":"AnnotationPage","items":[{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334/content/4/annotation/1","type":"Annotation","motivation":"painting","body":{"id":"https://aviary-p-arizona.s3.wasabisys.com/collection_resource_files/resource_files/000/270/334/original/azu_ms396-045_side2_a.mp3?1744847941","type":"Audio","format":"audio/mpeg","duration":242.928,"width":640,"height":360},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334","metadata":[]}]}],"annotations":[{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334/transcript/78711","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["transcript [Transcript]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334/transcript/78711/annotation/1","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"SPEAKER 1: The Ella was a wonderful spirit, and she would do things like she would. She did these imitations of all the staff people that were just right on and absolutely hysterical. But when the campaign was over, and by that time, we had Ella and I had reconciled. I still didn't go back on the road with her, but we had reconciled. There's that great Costello story about the day after I left. Do you remember that day? The day after I left the road, I went to New York. They went to Wisconsin, and Paul Costello, who was a young, advanced guy at the time, calls my calls me in New York at about six o'clock in the morning because Ella didn't sleep. So your my days went from, you know, four or five o'clock in the morning until two or three o'clock in the morning because she would call me and at four or five o'clock in the morning, and she would say, What are you on vacation? You know, let's go have a cup of coffee. And then she wanted to be in the bar all night, dancing and singing, and so they were very long days. Anyway, I get this call at six o'clock in the morning from Costello, and he says to me, we're in real trouble. We're in real trouble. I said, What's the matter? He said, there are two hookers outside Moe's room. We're in real trouble. The Press are going to see him. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. What should I do? I said, I don't know Paul. I mean, I'm not there. I can't tell you what to do. I would suggest that you know you. I don't know what to tell you anyway. I said go back, find out who they are, or find out if you can get them their own room. I don't know. Just go do something. So he went back. I don't know what he did, but he came back, and he called me later, and it turned out that there were two really nice women who had very blonde hair, and were which he which we all there are two women who he Ella, decided would travel with her from then on. And because they were so blonde and so tall, Costello started to call them the gold dust twins, and that's who they were. But he that was so early in the morning that he thought that they were that they were hookers. The other thing I just wanted to say was, after the campaign was over, after the campaign was over, I went back to Boston and the, oh, we're not, you're going to the, luckily you have batteries in it. And the Carter people, most of the most of the Udall advanced staff went to work for Mondale because the Carter people, when Ron Penton had cut a deal for all of our people to go to work for Carter Mondale, part of the deal was that Ron Penton was not allowed to work for them, they banished him, which broke his heart. I mean, it was they were nasty and horrible and and it broke his heart. And so why was it we Vicky? What was her name? Rogers. Vicky. Rogers, oh, she was horrible. She came in and she did this whole screaming and yelling at him about, you know, what an asshole he was, and she'd take his people, but he better not come anywhere near the campaign anyway that so I decided I was not going to go to work for them. And we all decided, but I went back to Boston, and I got a call from from Mrs. Carter's people to ask me if I would do advance for them. And I said, I don't think so. I really can't. And the next thing I know, I get a call, and it's Mo, and he says to me, so sweet child, which, I mean, talk about it. He said, so sweet child, what are you going to do? So I said, Nothing, Mom, I'm going to stay in Boston. I'm going to get a job, you know, going to try to straighten out my life. And he said, No, no, you're going to go to work for the Carters. And I said, No, Mo, I'm not going to go to work for the Carters. I just couldn't, not after having traveled with you and being with you, and I just couldn't. And he said to me, Iris, he said, I hate that little son of a bitch, but I'm going to go to work for him, and so are you.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334#t=1.0,233.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3179/collection_resources/146518/file/270334/transcript/78711/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: That's wonderful.
