Even though this program is usually recorded in a studio situation, today we have an opportunity to talk by telephone from his office in Phoenix, with the executive director of the Arizona Students Association, Pat Mitchell. Pat is the University of Arizona graduate, and has been in his present position since June of last year. With the 7778 school year coming to a close, we thought it might be timely to talk with Pat, about some of the concerns of students at Arizona's three universities. I think so. At this point, students are very concerned about the idea they're going to be paying more money to go to school. And here obviously, I think what concerns the most is the timing involved. Of course, you're aware of the financial aid deadlines. Of all past two, three, universities, as well. There is a problem in a general lack of financial aid available. JJ Humphries is the financial aid department, the University of Arizona, indicates that there is about $2 million in unmet need on the UCLA campus alone. So I'm quite sure students will be looking for a way to cope with that. Incidentally, that issue is not has not come to a completion yet. Well, the State student Incentive Grant Program is a is a federal program as part of the 1972 higher education amendments. It's in conjunction with the basic educational opportunity grants and the National Drug student loans and other federal aid programs. It provides a one to one match of state dollars with federal dollars, Arizona would have available to nearly nearly a million dollars in federal financial financial aid money if it could match program is designed to be matched by a grant from the state legislature. Arizona is the only state in the union that does not match these federal monies with state appropriated monies. Currently, we're enrolled in the program by using some local funds. But that leaves us some $300,000, short for funding. So we have introduced to bill and Joshua to border regions, and the community colleges and the Commission on post secondary education that would that would match at least 150,000. Of that it's basically because the program rolling this year, hoping to reach full funding next year. It's the reverse into an old ones, we think we're far superior. Almost every other university State University, the country, collects student sees as a student activity fee. In other words, students are paying what can really be called a tax to universities and to the student governments to be used for student activities. We want that that tax, which is currently being charged, we want that outline on there see cards, students will know exactly what they're paying for these are the services and exactly what to expect as a result, it also gives the Student Association more legitimacy because we tend to propose some guidelines that would, that would alleviate any potential hassles as to who actually has to control to spend the money. Most people that have followed this for some time know that this is a problem that basically age old, no more suitable when he was student body president in the 40s spot, exactly the same problems, as seen by presidents now are fighting.
