I'm Kent Rollins, and I'm glad you've joined us today. Do you remember the hula hoop or the pet rock? Did you ever think that you were if you could have been the one that came up with those ideas, you'd be rich today and maybe spending your life on an exotic Island sometime. You know, it's a nice thought in it. It really are a couple of great examples of the entrepreneurial spirit. And that's what we really want to talk about today. What is an entrepreneur? We're going to talk a little bit about the Carl Eller Center and the center opened in 1983 thanks to the generosity of alumnus Carl Eller Phoenix businessman and former football player for the University of Arizona. With us also will be Dr. Robert Tyndall, director of the Entrepreneurship Program at the University. In addition, we're going to talk to a recent graduate Judy Jenkins, Judy is out trying out some of her ideas that she learned in the Eller center. And Ron edelson, a current student who seems to have a lot of fresh ideas, and he's going to join us and talk a little bit about that as well. We're gonna save a little bit of time also for the homecoming Centennial homecoming 1985 I think most of you are aware that this year is the 100 year celebration at the university and homecoming is going to be something special. So Tom Roberts and alumnus who co chairs that event, and Jay Romanov, the student who does all the student programming will be with us. But you know, maybe before we get into this tape on the Carl Eller center, keep in mind that is that the idea that really makes the entrepreneur or is it the ability to take a risk and maybe look at failure on occasion and we're going to try to get some answers to that. But first let's look at the Carl Eller center tape.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73564/file/159309#t=70.0,190.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73564/file/159309/transcript/37759/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: 100 years ago, you could easily find them just by lugging up and down Main Street of any frontier town, a grocer, Taylor tailor, the butcher, the saloon keeper, the blacksmith business people yes. And they take all these courses at school economics and education courses and English courses and things like that, that maybe round out their background, but they never get a feel of what it takes to be an entrepreneur, to be a businessman and to really do the real life type of thing. And so we felt this kind of thing, you know, you're not going to teach an entrepreneur, we came to the conclusion that you don't teach young man or young woman to be an entrepreneur, either they, they've got it or they don't in a way. And what they can do is work in an environment of an entrepreneurial type School, which is coming around is Bob fit around around the country and growing very fast. If you keep them in that a cabinet environment, they have an opportunity to go forth and feel what it takes to do things like this. And then when when they do get out of school, they possibly might go to work for IBM and maybe become an IBM employee for the rest of their life. But at least they have a feel of what they can do. But what might happen is they work for IBM for a couple of years, and then they feel like they do have an idea. And then they might have the ability to go out and be able to find their little niche in the marketplace and started another company. Like the Federal Express, for example, Federal Express spawn from an idea that that a guy got on a term paper when he was an MBA at Harvard. The people at Harvard said it wouldn't work. He decided to do it on his own. He developed the Federal Express the new way of moving the parcel, and a package. The Hub system was developed, he struggled with it for years and all of a sudden, it's the biggest thing that revolutionizes the Express business.
