This program is brought to you by the University of Arizona's Alumni Association on this station. I'm Jay Rocklin editor of the University of Arizona's alumni magazine with you today, glad you're here joining us, we have a great show for you this time, we're gonna be talking about all kinds of issues that have to do with nursing and nursing as a profession and how it affects you as an individual and as a patient. We're also going to meet and get to know a University of Arizona basketball star who is going to help represent the United States in the Olympics in Barcelona. But this basketball player though is it's a shame not to he and she shoots her hoops from a wheelchair. Stay tuned for that. But right now, let me introduce Dr. Joanne Glidden Berg. So I can tell you the differences in the last 25 basically, the changes have occurred because of education. The more educated the nurses have become the greater they can contribute to society. But a lot of people don't understand about the education. And what this really means for let's say the bedside, the person who's ill and needs care, does it make any difference if the nurse taking care of you is educated at a associate degree level or diploma, baccalaureate, master's, PhD? Probably not, you probably don't really see the difference, because the care that's given tends to be fairly simple, sure routine. But it's the backside that I see that's changed so much. It's the leadership roles that the nursing profession has taken, and is taking, for instance, the American Nurses Association has come out with the national agenda for health care reform. It is, to me one of the biggest steps we've taken in nursing in the 25 years, that we as a nursing profession, are looked upon now as leaders in health care. I think what you're referring to would be having prescriptive authority, right, to give medications for what we would call ordinary simple problems that people have throughout life. Dr. Lee Ford and Dr. Harry, Harry Henry, was it here your Henry I don't remember silver, Dr. Silver, but that this was the beginning of a new movement of looking at nurses as really not extenders of physicians, which is very different, but in their own right being able to prescribe medications when the need arises. And I think that is the issue because there is a disparity in the the amount of salary that a nurse gets versus a physician, that is that is a given so that when the cost from prescribing from a nurse versus in a physician, you're going to get a difference in the cost. So that is one issue that I found very different. In other countries where I worked, for instance, in Australia, where I worked in 1983, I found that there wasn't such a disparity in salaries between the two. Because it's a socialized system. It's a welfare state, so that you don't really have the disparities in income as we do in the United States.
