I'm Mark beech. The University of Arizona College of Engineering has been awarded almost $400,000 from the Federal Energy Research and Development Administration to evaluate the environmental impact of establishing nuclear reprocessing plants in arid or semi arid regions. Dr. Robert seal professor and head of the U of A's nuclear engineering department and principal investigator for the project said the study will serve as a guideline for the selection of reprocessing plant sites, whether they be built in Arizona, other Southwestern states or abroad. So you'll set each plant but employ about 500 people. And since the distance might be too great for employees to commute from cities to the plans, it is possible that the reprocessing plants could lead to the development of adjacent communities. So you will set one reprocessing plant good sustain a community like Fort Huachuca or some other large permanent project. There is currently only one commercial reprocessing plant located in South Carolina. One of the pioneers in the area of solar research Dr. Aden meinel, a professor at the University of Arizona, warned in a recent speech that people may be expecting too much from solar energy. Dr. meinel says that he has become skeptical about the economic feasibility of solar energy in the future. He said one big problem is that of collecting energy over such large areas, as is required for solar energy. Miners said the building costs have risen so rapidly in recent years, they are outdistancing the increasing price of energy. He said this situation is a critical problem for solar energy, because so many collectors have to be built. Michael said that some major advances and how to build simplified solar collectors that are durable is needed. He said the problem comes right down to one of material sciences. And he said he's supporting a proposal to put a major effort into the material sciences area at the proposed Solar Energy Institute, which he hopes will be located here in Arizona. Dr. Helmut Frank is a professor of economics at the University of Arizona, and is also a nationally recognized authority on energy related problems, especially in the areas of gasoline and oil. Unfortunately, it is increasing. Our dependence has gotten worse, since the crisis of 1973 74 in two respects, one way importing a much larger volume of oil, and of course, at much higher prices than we ever did.
