I'm Kent Rollins, director of the Arizona Alumni Association. Every month we've been getting together to take a look at some aspect of the University of Arizona. Because of the interest shown by so many of you, we thought we'd use the next few programs to take an in depth look at just how the university operates, how the whole organization runs. To do this, we are inviting several vice presidents to get into specifics about their respective divisions of the University. Today, we are honored to have as our guest, Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Dudley Woodard, Doug, thanks for being with us and got a lot of material to cover tonight. I'd like to kind of launch into an area that maybe you haven't thought about for a while but you've been in Arizona for a few years came from Binghamton, New York. And I had heard a lot about the university and came to understand that it was a university with a destiny had great potential. And I wanted to be part of that. And that has been confirmed since I've come here. Someone asked me the other day, why the same question. And I thought about it. And I really have come to understand I love this institution. I've fallen in love with the University of Arizona, it's a wonderful place to work. I'm reminded of what the president says every once in a while he said he has one of the best jobs in the country every day he comes to work. There's new challenges, there's something different, something exciting is happening. And that's been Very successful, we still are not pleased with the results. We we want to recruit more students. And we certainly want to retain and graduate more students. But our minority student population last three years is growing significantly. Second thing I would say is we went to the legislature two years ago and asked for funding for retention programs, specifically aimed at minority students, but also aimed at any student attending university legislature partially funded that and we developed the Student Resource Center and also enhanced minority student affairs, with those funds to retain the students that we have recruited. And it's changed dramatically in the last decade. And just recently, the government, the federal government, passed the reauthorization of financial age, which again, has resulted in a number of changes in financial aid for our students very complex in that it's almost like reading the new tax law. And we have to communicate that to students and students need to understand what they can take advantage of. And that becomes very difficult. I'd like to say briefly can one of the concerns we have is if you look at financial aid in the last decade, there's really been a shift and a greater reliance on loans and less reliance on grant and federal aid in terms of purchasing power, the purchasing power of that dollar has been reduced. So students have not only faced a reduction, but they've also faced an increasing reliance on loans that concerns us. And our border regions. Last week, just authorized an increase in our waivers for needy students. And I'm really pleased with the action they've taken because it'll help us offset some of that increase in reliance on loans and provide some of these needy students grant money as well as loan money. I'm under the impression and it may be a wrong one that students are less willing to accept loans to go to school, they would obviously much prefer To get a grant that they don't have to pay back, do you see this shift to the loan area is really affecting enrollment, as sources dry up, and students are less likely to take a loan, are they going to stop coming?","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73579/file/159328#t=867.0,915.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73579/file/159328/transcript/37774/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: I don't think they're going to stop coming, I think what we see happening is they're extending their stay in the university, whether it's a community college or the university, and relying more on work. And so I think we see that students are extending what used to be, quote, unquote, the four year stay into a five or even in some cases to a six year. And in some cases, that's not so bad. But in other cases, I don't think it is. And students, if they're working 20 hours a week, 25 hours a week, don't take advantage of a university in ways that they should. I'm a very strong believer that the university is there to help you grow, to help you become competent in your academic discipline, but become competent in life skills, the kinds of experiences you have in a university helps shape your character, your attitudes, your values, and you need to immerse yourself in university life in order to benefit from that. Up until last year, that was all a quill and pen kind of operation, it was paper. And we had very little data processing support. Again, the region's in the legislature were generous and provided a new provided support for new student information system. And we've just automated the financial aid office. And we've gone through the first year of automation. And that's going to help immensely. And I think we should see some improvements of that next year. Secondly, would student registration come this fall, our students will be able to register for classes by using a telephone or pick up a telephone, it's called touchtone, we affectionately call it reach out in touch your registrar will just pick up they'll dial in their access code. And if it's their time to register, they can then dial in the appropriate course numbers and get confirmation as to whether they're in or out of those courses. If they haven't paid their bills, a little voice will come over and say sorry, can't you need to pay a library find where you can register. So I think the new student information system will will make some significant changes in how we serve our students. And that's our intent. It's really the the soul and a sense of, of student life and our whole philosophy if I can stated, again through the Dean of Students Office is to help create an environment which will help people simply grow. As part of university business, we want people to grow in terms of their decision making skills, their intellectual skills, their ability to make judgments, their ability to develop a broader appreciation for others cultures and values and interests. So that when they graduate from the University, and run up against problems, the unexpected the unknown, they can draw on those experiences and reach a decision or a course of action. That kind of learning doesn't come about simply by attending a class, that's part of it. But it really is the Gestalt. It's the whole environment. And we like to think of ourselves sort of as environmental engineers in a way that you create those kinds of experiences, which will help people grow. And that's really, the leadership for that comes from the dean of students. And we have an excellent dean of students. And the primary objective is to provide support to students, whether it's academic advising, counseling, career planning, tutoring or testing. And our objective is to locate those services in old Maine, which I think is wonderful, because to me all mean is a symbol of who we are our students.
