If you think of a wide range of behaviors, all of the things that are available for kids to do today compared to 10 2030 years ago, you would only have to say that they are behaviorally more permissive. If you look at specific behaviors, like sexuality, for example, we've been led to believe that adolescents are sexually more permissive, but in truth, that's really not the case. I think that the media has blown this thing out of proportion, that things like literature, motion films, some television programs, and certainly the rock music that a lot of youth listen to, indicates that many adolescents are pre mature in their sexual behaviors. And when in many cases, that's not true. For example, the rate of premarital sexuality in adolescence throughout the high school years does not exceed 20%. And they have learned to be dependent on something as simple as aspirin to a barbiturate, or to an amphetamine to penicillin, or other kinds of pain, killing drugs. Experiment with alcohol and over half of those are regular users of it. The reason for that, I think, is because in the last five to six years, there's actually been a decline in the use of marijuana, and a switch from that over to alcohol. One of the reasons for this is it's easier to attain, it's legal. There are very few negative sanctions associated with alcohol. And that simply is not the case with marijuana. Now in the area of family relationships, don't adolescent peers replace the family during the adolescent years? They do if you look at the behavior that an adolescent wants to do today or tomorrow, if the choice is to do something with families or with peers, adolescents almost always choose their peers to do things with. If you talk about the kinds of things that are important to an adolescent over time, like occupation, that they may go into educational preparation beyond high school, and so on.
