I'm Mark beech to mumok. Hill, a unique University of Arizona laboratory just west of Tucson has been designated the National Environmental study area. University of Arizona president dr. john Schaefer received papers earlier this month from the US Park Service, saying that the historic Hill had met certain specific requirements as a unique study area. The U of A conducts a wide range of studies there, including some on vegetation, animal life, soils and anthropological finds, among others. There is a small observatory there to the Hill became the property of the U of A and 1958 and was designated a National Historic Landmark just a little over a year ago, the name of the Arizona Medical Center has been changed to the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. Dr. Merlin K. Duval, the U of A's Vice President for Health Sciences, says the name change more accurately reflects the coordinated role of Health Sciences at the University. The Health Sciences Center includes University Hospital, and the colleges of medicine, nursing and pharmacy. Dr. de vous at the Health Sciences Center is a concept rather than a single building, and that over a period of time, custom and usage of the new name will displace the term Arizona Medical Center. The US Forest Service has awarded $190,000 to the University of Arizona Office of arid land studies to establish an information system related to mining and surface environment. The project will investigate the effects of mining on surface environments in the United States west of the 100th meridian. The program will involve along with the Office of arid land studies, the survey colleges, mines, agriculture and architecture. Voters in Arizona will decide the fate of the controversial and widely publicized proposition 200 on Election Day, November 2. On first reading looks like a very reasonable proposition. It has provisions for ensuring the safety of the public and removing liability limits on the insurance provisions. And if you read this, superficially, or without any particular knowledge about nuclear energy in general, you might well be inclined to believe that it really would result in safer nuclear power. And in fact, that was the objective of the people who wrote the initiative to make it appear to be a very positive document. If you read it more carefully, however, you will find that there are provisions there that are impossible to comply with the insurance provision in particular will be impossible to comply with, because federal legislation which has just recently been re enacted will actually preclude the state from and preempt the state from taking over that responsibility. The safety provisions and the waste management provisions actually add just another bureaucratic layer to an already well institutionalized by regulatory various regulatory groups. requirements.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73767/file/159450#t=127.0,210.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1953/collection_resources/73767/file/159450/transcript/37691/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: I've been talking with Dr. Richard brim a professor of nuclear engineering at the University of Arizona, a University of Arizona reading professor Dr. Amelia Melnick has received the outstanding educator award from the Arizona State reading console at its annual conference in Phoenix recently, the award honors Dr. Melnick, the co founder of the U of A department of reading for nearly two decades of contributions to the field of reading and Arizona education. Dr. Melnick wrote the proposal for a state certification of reading personnel that was established in 1966. By the Arizona State Board of Education, the University of Arizona has been awarded slightly more than $70,000 by the National Endowment for the Humanities to produce a videotape series on American Indian storytellers, singers and dancers. Dr. Lawrence Evers, you have a English professor who drafted the proposal for the federal funding said segments will be taped in eight tribal communities which include the Yaki Navajo Papago, Apache, Maya and Hopi ever said fieldwork would start in late October with the taping sessions scheduled with a Navajo singer and a Hopi lullaby performer performances will be recorded and the artists native languages with English translations added as subtitles.
