This program is brought to you by the University of Arizona's Alumni Association in this station. I'm Jay Rocklin editor of the University of Arizona's alumni magazine. Today we're going to have an interesting discussion or actually two interesting discussions. One serious one fun, both with the same man. Let me introduce Professor Albert J. Bergeson. He's a sociology professor at the University of Arizona. Welcome, good to have you join us, that'd be great. One of the things that you've been looking at getting right into the subject is that the whole nature of the changing American family and obviously we've seen changes over the years drastic changes, all kinds of combinations that people put together are kind of mind boggling. But for many people, those those changes are working. Give us a feel for what's going on from a sociological point of view.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909#t=47.0,112.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909/transcript/37809/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: Well, you know, sociologists have talked about the Modern Family and modern industrial society, being mom and pop in the kids what's called the nuclear family, and then divorce rates have gotten quite high. And the question is, is that nuclear family just breaking up? Well, it turns out some 80 90% of people that get divorced, remarried. So in some sense, the old discussion about how serial monogamy, Margaret Mead, or someone might be an ideal, actually is true. That is important. In fact, you have high divorce rates, everyone's divorcing not everyone, but it's close to 50%. Get there while remarry? The truth of the matter is, is that serial monogamy in some sense, really is becoming a fact of modern life. It is","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909#t=113.0,150.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909/transcript/37809/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: so soon, I guess nuclear families aren't disintegrating, we're just getting new nuclear family.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909#t=151.0,155.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909/transcript/37809/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: That's one thing we're getting new nuclear families with with many people since you get other partners who are also nuclear families, they call those blended. Okay. You know, families. Were also I think getting something else because along with a divorce, there's been two newer developments divorce both for a while. One of them is the divorce has gotten softer, you're friendly with your ex, right, no fault. And the second one is the idea of joint custody is increasingly becoming presumptive in Arizona for the last few years in the legislature that's been built to make it presumptive presumptive, meaning the judge will now assume that custody ought to be joint with both parents assume that and you've got to prove single custody. Now, it's single custody, usually mom, pretty for the younger kids, and you got to prove joint. But in California, New York and other states, it's already joint and Arizona probably will be to divorce lawyers tell me that means now that you have soft divorce, you're friendly with your ex wife or ex husband, you still have ties with your kids. So what in some sense is happening to our family life is that not only is it breaking up and rejoining. But our ties continue to stay with x immediate family members as they join other families. And as they get divorced and recombined. It's like family webs. It's like the families kind of losing out and getting wider and wider.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909#t=156.0,235.999"},{"id":"https://arizona.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1078/collection_resources/73614/file/159909/transcript/37809/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"UNKNOWN SPEAKER: You've coined a fascinating term to describe that phenomenon, filament filament family. And it's thin because they aren't there, your kids, but now they're in someone else's family, but they may get divorced. And then there'll be in someone else's family, but they had brothers from the other family and they still want to be friends. So you could end up having all kinds of relations with all kinds of things. So family life, along with this a tight nuclear family. There's also a thinner, wider web of ties that we're having. And sometimes it gets hilarious. You can be in a family today, in which both of the kids that you have aren't your own. Right. I mean, just, you know, your kids could have gone somewhere else but you know, your ex's kids stayed with you and, and my other wives kids stayed with me. Sure, they make the bed half let them whatever, okay, you have less sympathy, but kids don't don't pick that. And I think that is tough racket. On the other hand, if this is the way our life is gonna be, you know, one time people thought an extended family was natural, that you ought to have grandma and grandpa and uncles and Tony and everyone there. And then when that broke down to the nuclear family, they thought that was pathological. Now we accept that. So in some sense, there might be built in confusions, even identity problems, problem, possibly understanding parents or dealing with parental roles that might not show up until 1025 years from now, when kids raised in this environment come to have families of their own. The other side is just as fascinating. A bad coach if he gets into a final game bad on him. Why? It can't be as coaching. So the only thing it can be is the players and most final games. When the game gets more physical, more simple notice was in the bears, the Giants noticed Randall Cunningham's out the run and shoots out, the more conservative teams are in then the teams with a players win and the poor, the worse he is to be there. So in some sense, there were some great players, too. But it's it. You got to get over coach's career and talk about the excellent. If you look at their one loss record for a career, it's the closest thing you can get whether good or bad is always debatable, but that's one way to quantify it. And what you can do is look at some statistics, win loss record versus championship record. And in some of these football things, we found negative associations, the better coaches do. do worse, it seems to work better in football than basketball or baseball.
